New Hampshire - The Brentwood Teaching Center has open forge dates listed on the Teaching Center's page. The NEB FAll meet (September 17, 18, 19) is still in the planning stages - This fall Bob Menard, the BOD, and Brentwood Teaching Center Committee will host a meet at Brentwood, NH with Mark Aspery as the demonstrator. Connecticut - *** 8-11 July 2010 – North Stonington Fair, CT. CBG now runs the Blacksmith Shop at the Fair. Volunteers are needed to talk or demo in the shop. We need to have the list of names to the Fair Committee ahead of time in order to get passes and insurance. Please call Chip Sowalski, 860-287-5295, hardiepritchel@sbcglobal.net. *** 17-18 July 2010- 9:30-5:00, Blacksmithing & Toolmaking -Make a Woodworking Chisel, a Turning Gouge or some other Woodworking Tool with Walt Scadden. Ct Valley School of Woodworking, 249 Spencer St, Manchester, Ct 06040. Tool making is probably one of the most useful skills that a blacksmith has and this new class will give you an appreciation of some of the techniques used. Students will have the chance to make a woodworking chisel and a turning gouge (or a second chisel if you prefer). Shaping the tool steel, annealing and hardening the steel, grinding the cutting edge and fitting the handles are just a few of the steps you will take to make some great tools that you can truly call your own. This fun class will give you a chance to try out blacksmithing, or polish your skills if you have taken past classes. Don’t miss it! Tuition: $245.00.00 plus materials. Section 071710A. Outside of New England for those who like to travel a bit further: New York: ---Hammer-In / Fire-In --- Salem, NY — ‘HAMMER-IN / FIRE-IN’ – Come join us for a weekend festival of earth, iron and fire, August 7th and 8th at Salem Art Works. Inspired by the wonder of molten metal and the primal elements, Salem Art Works hosts a celebration of iron casting and forging with fire and heat. SAW will host a Hammer-In in conjunction with the Group Iron Residency cast iron pour the same weekend. The festival is open to all blacksmiths, so bring your wares. For those wishing to sell their work there is a vending fee. Open from 11 am onwards, admission is free. · Blacksmithing groups and ABANA chapters are encouraged to promote their organizations. · Vendor Fee $35.00 (including tailgating) applies only to participants with items for sale. · Demonstration set-up is free on the spacious grounds adjacent to the SAW smithy and GLO glass studio. · Free camping. Tent or camper, no hookup. Bathroom facilities on site. · Food and drink vendors on site. · Create your own "Scratch Blocks" to be cast at the iron pour. · A group raffle will be held to benefit SAW and participating blacksmith organizations (Contact: Anthony Cafritz – acafritz@salemartworks.com - for raffle participation details)
On Sunday August 8th there will be a public cast iron pour. Come be a part of modern day alchemy as artists transform everyday scrap iron into beautiful works of art. The public is invited to witness this spectacle from the sidelines free of charge, or join in the magic by creating your very own piece of cast-iron art. For a small fee, scratch blocks will be provided for those who wish to design a small relief carving and watch it being poured. Additionally the GLO glass studio will be open for demonstration as well as the new anagama wood fired ceramic kiln. Come and share your skills and learn some new ones as we celebrate Earth, Iron and Fire at the Salem Art Works. Salem Art Works is a 501(c) 3 art colony and sculpture park. Open from June to October, SAW hosts a number of events such as the Salem Art Works Music Festival on July 31st, and workshops in ceramics, glass blowing, blacksmithing, metal sculpture, jewelry, drawing and painting. The public is welcome to tour the Sculpture Park and grounds. Hours are 10am – dusk, open daily (closed Mondays).
